Being in Wonderland (HOLA Awards Gala)

Janet Dacal of Broadway's Alice in Wonderland
Lauren Velez, Tony Plana, Jose Yenque, John Quinones, Janet Dacal, Telemundo and Univision were in the same room as me!!! And no one had to kick me out or anything!!

As you may recall, I attended the HOLA Awards Gala that honored many amazing Latino actors and those in the media

I've talked a lot about being a member of the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors [click here for a refresher].

While in law school, I attended an event by the Puerto Rican Bar Association where a member of the Board of Directors from HOLA was speaking. I spoke to him about my interest in entertainment law, and he handed me their press packet.* Fast forward many years later and I became a member of HOLA...not as an attorney, but as an actress.  Life's funny, ain't it?

I went to the HOLA awards and snapped hundreds of pictures and videos until my batteries ran out, acting like these were my kids performing at a school show. Meanwhile I don't know any of these people! But of course I'm hootin' and hollerin' at every award recipient. Why? Because these are mi gente

Here are a few pics of those that received awards:

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Working On My Fitness

Have you seen this woman on youtube? Her work outs are way advanced and her body is KILLER!

Screen shot  from http://bodyrock.tv/
She's amazing. When I need motivation to get away from the computer or the tv, I go to her site or check out one youtube video. Despite the shots geared toward men who watch her video, I find her very motivating. All I need is to watch her work out for 2 minutes, and I grab my gym bag and go.

Enjoy the Work-Your-Ass-Off-Wordless-Wednesday my friends.

Now go kick your own butt in the gym.

My Work With Truth - A Platform

My time with truth campaign recently became part a Wordless Wednesday post [click here].

I stumbled upon the pictures and posted them because it was work that made a difference in my life and in the lives of others. It was work I enjoyed. It was work that I loved.

I've talked about my time with truth before:
I still support the [truth®] campaign, (in the name of two uncles that passed as the result of tobacco related diseases)....  I'm proud to say I marketed to young urban teens [those targeted by Big Tobacco] and [became the vehicle that allowed] my cousin [to] appear in a truth commercial in support and in honoring his fathers memory.

Blog Action Day 2010: It's Our Water.

Water is a Health issue. A Human Rights Issue. A global Issue.

I'm not exactly the most green person. I recycle. I try to shut off the lights. I try to take short showers. I try to do laundry only when its full. That's as green as I get. I try. But do I try hard enough?

Puerto Rican? Nuyorican? Who Cares?

Image from Google Images
Some consider themselves Puerto Rican. Others Nuyorican. What’s the difference?

Here’s the definition from the ever wise and always accurate Wikipedia:

Nuyorican is a blending of the terms "New York" and "Puerto Rican" and refers to …Puerto Ricans living in… New York…. The term is also used ...to differentiate those of Puerto Rican descent from the Puerto Rico-born…Nuyoricans are not considered Puerto Ricans by island Puerto Ricans due to cultural differences; this is a very controversial topic amongst both groups.”

Ay yay yay. Like we need more controversy.

Blogalicious10, aka An Ode to Homealicious

Todays post is a little random, and excessive since I don't normally post this often in one week.

In case you didn't know, there's this kick-ass blog conference in Miami right now: Blogalicious. Many amazing bloggers are there right now! I was dying to go. I got offered free tickets several times but I just couldn't afford the flight and hotel. I'm not the only one.

Not everyone could make it to sunny Miami this weekend for the Blogalicious weekend. I am in the "not everyone" circle (it's ok. there's always next year! Si se puede!!! LOL).

I randomly started tweeting about #homealicious, as a joke, for those of us that couldn't go:

Removing Obstacles. Pursuing Passion.

I haven't heard an expression that captured it quite like this:
It's like there was a drought, and suddenly there was water; I couldn't get enough.
-Katherine Bigelow (on film making)

So there was this drought. I was practicing law in the desert and I was completely unhappy. And then I started blogging. Water! But only for a time, because I'm still in the desert and my throat burns. Then I started acting.  More water! Then I'm parched again, thank you friggin desert. Someone open the flood gates!!! Please! But no. Just enough water to survive.

But I've tasted the relief. And now I'm thirsty for more water. Always thirsty. Thirsty for more.
This desert can't hold me down.

A Morning in Mourning

Image from Google Images
Two weeks ago I had a dream about a family reunion. I woke up and told Che, I think there's gonna be a funeral.

The next week, I burst in to tears at work for a few minutes when my mom called me hysterical. Tia passed away.

My Great Aunt (my grandmothers sister) who was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, was married to a Jewish man. She represents the entire Jewish side of my family.

Needless to say, the funeral was huge. Do you know how many Puerto Ricans constitute immediate family? Todos.
Theresa was a gorgeous, classy, kick ass woman. Her husband is a wonderful man.  As we sat in his home, amongst his children and grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he sat, despondent. So I opened my big fat mouth and asked how he met my Great Aunt. Then he lit up! He told me, with eyes bright like he was reliving it at that very moment:

Today is Our First #LushLunes

The Art of Doing Nothing: Simple Ways to Make Time for YourselfMondays often suck. But what if we had a #LushLunes to look forward to?

Perhaps Mondays would suck less.

I'm experimenting with the notion that if we have something small to look forward to on a Monday - aside from the end of the day - then maybe our Monday (or "Lunes" in Spanish) could be something to celebrate instead of drag our feet to.

It can become a way to cultivate or incorporate some serenity into our Mondays.

Welcome to Funkville

Image from Google Images
Something is definitely wrong when you spill something and you want to just cry.

I basically took a bite of pizza, which was after signing up for Jillian Michaels online program to tone up this body, and a nice chunk of cheese fell on my pink shirt and my black "pants" [aka jeans because I'm not supposed to wear jeans to work, so if I call them pants, then its ok].

I'm wearing a pink blouse today, people. This is not shocking to you? Leme splain somsing to ju. My closet consists of black, white, brown, grey, navy, and beige. I bought this pink blouse on Monday. Friggin pink. Friggin stupid pink because I'm trying to expand my friggin color horizon.

So I'm not actually crying over the spilt milk - er, cheese -  but about all the other things that have been building, and that I just tuck away for a better time.
