The Travel Bug: Loving Puerto Rico

Many of you know I sooo love to travel. This past year I got out of my comfort zone and travelled to Spain and Aruba, and only went to Puerto Rico twice. I know that sounds funny and I may sound like a brat complaining - but it's less of a complaint and more of a whine. I love Puerto Rico and I miss it. The island calls to my heart and it feels like I'm home sick when I'm not there.

When people talk about going there,
I get so excited and want to tell them to go to all of these places, however, the majority of my experience is in:
  • Aguadilla
  • Mayaguez
  • Rincon
  • Ponce
  • Old San Juan

My favorite beach in the world is in Aguadilla (see the beach as depicted above). My favorite places to eat are in Viejo San Juan [Old San Juan].

I"m going to take some time to think about my favorite places in these towns, however quaint they may be. I haven't really done touristy things unless I'm bringing someone to the island for the first time or like this past winter when Che took me to Puerto Rico for my birthday. But the info I do have, I hope will help others when planning their trips (So stay tuned for that post).

For all of you who have been to Puerto Rico or live in Puerto Rico, please tell me your favorite:
  • towns
  • beaches
  • places to eat
  • sight-see

Please give me your input! I can't wait to hear it!

  1. My visits to PR were always to visit family so in that sense everywhere I went was my favorite place. I only went to a touristy beach once, after my Abuela had passed and we went to see more the sights type visit. I yearn to go back though my family has changed and spread out over there. The family used to own a large finca but it was sold off years ago after the oldest son died in 1984. I want to return, because the warmth of the air and people coddle and call my soul.

  2. Melissa, I completely agree with you when you say everyplace is your favorite. Its beautiful that you want to return simply for the wonderful feeling of the air and the people... those are my sentiments exactly! Thanks for taking the time to comment!

  3. Most of the places I have visited are on the west coast also since my parents are from Aguadilla. I visited last May and posted about our trip at http://www.modernmami.com/puerto-rico/visit-puerto-rico.

Sometimes, you just have to rent a car and start driving around to find some new spots. :)

  4. I'm currently living and working here and have to agree that there are so many great places to see. One of the reasons I started my site :o). I have yet to really discover the west side; it's on my 'to do' list. But some of my favorites include:
Old San Juan - love just going there and strolling around

The east coast (route 3 south) has some really great scenery and nice small beaches

Utuado region is scenic and Lago Dos Bocas is a must. Really picturesque lake with several lake side restaurants serving great Puerto Rican food

El Yunque rainforest - but try to get there early to beat the crowds

Now I just need more vacation time to explore...

  5. Puerto Rico is synonymous with familia for me and so wherever my family and friends were, that is where I wanted to be. Sadly, its been almost seven years since I have gone back to my isla. I hope to change that this year. When I do go, I want to explore the island as a tourist since I know much has changed.

That being said, I can't wait to read your future posts of all the places to see in La Isla Del El Encanto!

  6. Melanie - yes, renting a car is a must. That way you get to really see the island, as opposed to staying in one spot, cabbing it to and from restaurants.
Brian - I have yet to discover the East coast! I've spent a lot of time in San Juan but that's about it. So, thanks for the great tips!

Ms. Latina - I think it would be so much fun to explore it as a tourist. I did a little of that this year, which I'll tell you in my future posts!

Melissa, Melanie, Brian, Ms. Latina, Thanks so much for sharing your Puerto Rico experiences and for the support!
