New Years Resolutions? Share them in Times Square!

What is your New Years Resolution? Are you sitting there saying "Hell if I know." or "Probably a lot of the same ol' stuff..."  Well, maybe this year it can be different. I'm a big believer in the power of intention and putting what you want out into the universe. So aside from rambling on to someone after a few too many coquitos about how this year things are gonna change, put it in writing! Make a concrete affirmation that the things you want out of this life will in fact change.

Under Construction - By A Novice.

So, I'm still trying to figure out how to use the "read more" function on my blog. I found this really great site that has user friendly explanation on how to add the javascript on BloggerBuster. That site is really great. But here's what happened. I'm a novice at this html stuff! Sure I got the hang of it with editing my old Myspace profile but this is a whole other ball game.
I'm having issues with javascript conflicting with the jump function, page load time, why the embedded youtube video disrupts the entire page ... and the list goes on and on. In my heart I think, "maybe if I give it some time to adjust, it will cure on its own," as though I were waiting for that layer of primer to dry before I paint. html is not primer. I know this. But I don't know for certain whether I'm even using the proper tech lingo, that's how lost I am.

Goodbye To Another Year

The years have flown by. Looking back on my life, I realize that I have accomplished a lot during the short amount of time I have spent on this planet thus far. That's something to be proud of.

The Spirit of Christmas

The  Operation Santa Claus program is something I've always wanted to be a part of. But I've been a little afraid to think I am bringing gifts to a family that may not want to see a stranger at their door. But after reading Santa's Blog I see there are many ways to contribute and I can just mail the gifts as being, "from Santa". I'm really excited about this!

According to Santa's blog, you can get "Dear Santa" letters at a participating location in your town. To participate in New York:

You may visit Operation Santa Claus at the James A. Farley Building in New York .... Letters must be picked up in person.... Each person requesting "Dear Santa" Letters can receive a maximum of 6 letters.
...The Operation Santa Claus program will commence on December 1, 2009 and will end on December 24, 2009. You cannot pick up letters on Sundays. If you have any questions about the program please leave a voice mail at 212-330-3000 and your call will be returned as soon as possible.

If you want to participate but don't want to buy any gifts, you can donate to the program online.  Please check out Operation Santa Claus where you live to see if it moves your spirit of giving. In the meantime, you can follow Santa on Twitter  for updates or become a fan on Facebook.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil (In light of the Presidential Address)

Many of us walk around with blinders on. We don’t want to hear about war. We don’t want to see images of war. We don’t want to speak about war. And in doing so we neglect those who fight on our behalf. We take them for granted… just as we take it for granted that as Americans we do not see war on our soil. In fact, September 11, 2001 was the first time many saw a glimpse of the terror that is too common-place on foreign land. Although we may “never forget,” we are so shaken-up that we don’t want to think about it. But we have to take the time to think about it.

So many of us are oblivious to what the troops go through to make sure we live safely in our little bubbles. Many of us go to work every day without worrying about the travesty’s faced by war-riddled countries or about the sacrifices of our troops. However, this “ignorance is bliss” attitude is not a reflection of how we feel about the men and women overseas. It’s just a type of avoidance - a defense mechanism for those of us who find it too difficult to bear. I am guilty of this type of avoidance, even though my cousin is serving in the Air Force, did four tours in Kuwait and is currently on tour in Iraq.

When I was a little girl in the late 80’s, three of my cousins came to live with us from Japan. They lived on a base, traveling around every four years or so, and when my aunt and uncle split, I was introduced to my cousin “Cruz.” Cruz was a little older than me and became the older brother I never had. Cruz taught me how to ride a bike and he also taught me a little rebellion… (a kid-type of rebellion, like telling me I didn’t have to finish my food if I didn’t want to). During the year he, his sisters and my aunt lived with us, he taught me the art of torturing my little sister and informed me that it wasn’t the stork that brought her to our life. Growing up, Cruz was quite a riot! As a child, I never would have thought he’d be fighting a war when he grew up.

Cruz has been a very charming and kind person. Years passed and as we got older we lost touch. I found out Cruz was in the Air force when I was in law school. He called to tell me how proud he was of ME. I have never told him just how proud I am of HIM. He learned Spanish while living in Texas and met the woman who he would eventually marry, and with whom he has a daughter.

Cruz is one of the most well-rounded individuals I know… He is my cousin and I love him. Yet, I have never told him how much I appreciate what he is doing for us. I never asked him what it feels like to leave his wife, little girl, sisters and parents behind. I never asked him if he is ever afraid. When I see my cousin I stick to questions about the here and now. I cannot bear to think about what he has gone through or the what-ifs of what he is facing. I don’t know that I will ever have the courage to ask those questions. But it is time to take the blinders off and tell Cruz as well as those fighting on our behalf, “THANK YOU.” Without them, without people like my cousin, we wouldn’t feel safe at home.

WE MISS YOU.

WE THANK YOU.
