Preciosa te llaman las olas del mar que te bañan.

Puerto Rico moment #10: Looking at the beach from Parque Colon as the sun dances off the turquoise surface of the ocean, glistening like diamonds skidding across the surface. Then letting out a long sigh. Ahhhh, I will miss you Aguadilla, Preciosa eres!

Too Early To Understand

Puerto Rico moment#9: Waking up at 6am saying "what's that banging- ugh, is someone knocking?" Yelling out the second floor window "quien es?!" seeing the 80 year old neighbor cleaning, he looks up at my window and says "que?" Me, deliriously perceiving it as drumming, I growl in English "Oh it's you,"and go back to sleep. Only later do I realize it wasn't a dream.

Lanes? Who Needs Lanes?

Puerto Rico moment#8: Driving through El campo on a tiny road the size of my car hoping no other car comes from the opposite direction. There are steep hills / cliffs on either side. This is the part of that horror movie where we yell at the screen, "Get outa there! What are you doing?!" Yet, I must press on. If another car comes, someone will have to reverse and its not gonna be me.

Breaking The Rules

Puerto Rico moment#7: Taking a shortcut through el pueblo, going the wrong way on a one way street and honking as I get to the top to let traffic know I'm coming. Being prepared to tell the police I'm a tourist, I don't speak spanish & I don't know the roads. What? Every street seems to be going one way in a direction that is not beneficial to me! Isn't that always the case (Sigh).

No Secrets Between Us

Puerto Rico moment #6: In El Pueblo of Aguadilla, I see the neighbor next door pick up their phone. Suddenly I hear the telephone ring across the street. I then hear the woman answer the ringing telephone. I wind up hearing their whole conversation.

Fried Food Phenomenon

Puerto Rico moment #5: I nonchalantly ate a 12"x12" bacalaito that I purchased for $2.00 while walking through a flea market. Of course I have the swagger, like," what? You've never seen this before?"

Life Lessons

Puerto Rico moment #4: Take this lesson with you, should you ever visit Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican people on the island will never be pressed for time regardless if you are(this also applies to most of the Puerto Rican members of my family).

Planes leave late and they leave early. The waitress may never come back. Scheduled meeting times between friends and relatives are rarely met. You can huff and puff, but it will get you nowhere. Leave your NY state of mind at home, my friend. Just sit back and relax. You're on La Isla Del Encanto after all! (This is Me talking to Myself).

I Hate Bats

Puerto Rico moment #3: Picture this: Midnight "en el campo" (the country side). Stars bejewel the clear night sky. While strolling past palm trees to my cousins home, I am crouching behind my petite 18 year old goddaughter so the bats that are diving through the sky get her first. Every woman for herself!

Coqui Confusion

Puerto Rico moment #2: My mothers cell phone rings to the sound of the Coqui singing ever since my sister recorded the sound on her phone and set it as a ring tone. Tonight, strolling along in San Sebastian, with the sounds of El Coqui filling the air, my mother says,"is that my phone or a coqui?"

Puerto Rico Moments

While on my trip to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, rather than write a long blog about what I did and where I went (like I did when I returned from Spain a few months ago), I've decided to post some moments that I cherished, thought were hysterical, or that I thought were Classic PR that I experienced during that week. Maybe you can relate? Enjoy!

Puerto Rico moment #1: Drank ice cold coconut juice from a coconut with a straw, which I purchased from the side of the road in Aguada. Of course its called the, 'NY Market.'
